Hacker in Residence, Joe Schwartz ’92CC

For nearly 20 years, Joe has designed software, developed systems, and advised businesses in the technology and finance sectors. He has played critical roles with a spectrum of startups, media and entertainment companies, and financial firms, bringing to each a high-level appreciation for business concerns and a hands-on love of technology. From desktop software to mobile applications, Joe has implemented a wide variety of technologies on several platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux.

Joe’s projects have included building one of Zimbabwe’s first internet service providers; games for early Blackberry devices; a web-based movie recommendation engine based on a crowdsourced collaborative filtering model; compression algorithms for a proprietary network stack; and several location-aware mobile apps.

A true hacker at heart, he also dabbles in physical computing. Recent projects include programming Arduino-based LED displays and developing a responsive LED mirror for Square Design. For fun, he tinkers with LEGO robotics and Google Chrome plugins; he also recently launched a mobile conch simulator for iOS and Android.

Joe is a former attorney at Goodwin Procter where he worked with companies and individuals on regulatory, litigation, and criminal matters. He graduated from Columbia College in the City of New York in 1992 and from NYU Law School in 2006.
