Imagine walking into your bedroom, your office, or your living room and all of sudden, all of your mobile devices seamlessly start to recharge. This is the vision that Yank Tech co-founder and CEO Josh Yank, ’14 MBA from Binghamton University, had in December of 2013. Now, Josh and his co-founder and Chief Engineer Jin Li, ’15 MS in Electrical Engineering from SEAS, are ramping up their product and business development in the Columbia Startup Lab.
“Technology today is like a sexy Ferrari that’s really low on gas. It’s beautiful and amazing, but limited in reaching its true potential,” said Josh Yank.
Today, the wireless charging market is estimated to be worth over $2 billion with an expectation to grow at a CAGR above 50% over the next three years. However, these products make the phrase “wireless charging” something of a misnomer, as they require point-to-point contact with your device and are reliant on a wire to use.
Yank Tech has invented true wireless charging, no point-to-point contact required. Yank Tech has fully-functional prototypes demonstrating its novel wireless charging technology. Not only can the company show its technology operating with multiple types of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and two-way radios, but also with different brands, from iOS to Android, as well as multi-device charging capabilities.
“We’re in conversations with OEMs who are looking to integrate our wireless charging technology into a wide range of systems from smartphones to TVs to two-way radios,” said Jin Li.
Yank Tech incorporated, patented its technology, and funding is already rolling in as Josh and Jin demonstrate their fully-functional wireless charging prototypes.
The company is currently preparing to launch a crowdfunding campaign for its B2C product line called the MotherBox. The MotherBox can sense the battery level of your device, turn itself on when needed, and wirelessly recharge your device during use. For the first time, you can wirelessly charge your smartphone in your pocket as you walk to an important meeting with the MotherBox in your briefcase, backpack, or pocketbook. Alternatively, you can wirelessly charge your tablet as you lean back at your desk, relax, or even do work at the same time. Whether you’re at home or on-the-move, the MotherBox will ensure you’re always charged up and ready to go.
