DESCRIPTION:NYC Media Lab is seeking NYC university-based teams that endeavor to start new companies. The XR Startup Bootcamp will support teams working on VR/AR\, voice technology and other future interfaces. The program will empower teams to adopt the “lean” startup method to search for and develop a business model for their startup concept. The program runs from September through November 2018 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Participating teams will receive mentorship from leading media and technology executives and investors from NYC Media Lab Member Companies and $10\,000 in funding.  \nProgram Eligibility: Faculty members\, students (undergraduate and graduate)\, and/or existing startups affiliated with a NYC-based university are eligible to apply. DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL \nRSVP HERE \nMay 1\, 2018 \n3:00 – 5:00 PM \nEarl Hall – Columbia University \n  \nColumbia Technology Ventures (CTV) and venture investors Osage University Partners (OUP) invite you to join a free seminar on two topics: “The behind-the-scenes view on how VCs evaluate potential startup CEOS” and “Understanding the real economics of university startup formation”. Drawing from 25 years of venture capital experience\, Osage University Partners (OUP) managing partner Marc Singer will take you through the CEO search process\, how VCs evaluate potential entrepreneur\, and some observations about drivers for long-term success as an entrepreneur.  \nThe audience will assess mock candidate profiles and learn methods of diligence to choose the right leader for your startup. OUP principal John Lee will then take you step-by-step through the life of a company\, illustrating the different types equity\, the pros and cons of each equity type depending on different company outcomes\, and the economic effect this has on founders’ shares.  Data will be presented to support the conversation around founders’ equity\, the right allocation between faculty vs. post docs vs. grad students\, and how much equity one needs to give away to attract and keep your top talent. These inventions eventually save and improve the lives of people around the world\, and the revenue generated flows back to the inventors and university to help catalyze new research breakthroughs in the future. In this interactive presentation\, Columbia Tech Ventures’ Executive Director Orin Herskowitz\, will discuss how all of this happens at Columbia and our peer universities; the ways that modern universities are supporting the creation of new startups based on scientific research; and the challenges entrepreneurs and investors often face while bringing these new technologies to market. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Orin Herskowitz\, Executive Director\, Columbia Technology Ventures; Senior Vice President for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer \n  \nOrin Herskowitz is the Senior VP of Intellectual Property and Tech Transfer for Columbia University\, as well as\, Executive Director of Columbia Technology Ventures (CTV). DESCRIPTION:Join Columbia WIN for a discussion between two leading members of the early-stage biotech community. Nina Tandon\, CEO and co-founder of EpiBone\, and Hemai Parthasarathy\, Scientific Director of Breakout Labs and the Thiel Foundation (and investor in Epibone)\, will discuss the current state of biotech investing\, their lessons on lifescience entrepreneurship\, and some advice for those looking to launch their own companies in this space. \nFollowing the presentation\, there will be a networking reception with drinks and appetizers in the same location from 5 to 6 pm. \nThis event is open to all members of the Columbia University community with valid CUIDs. We regret that we are unable to accommodate guests from outside Columbia for this event. \nNina Tandon is CEO and co-founder of EpiBone\, the world’s first company growing living human bones for skeletal reconstruction. She is the co-author of Super Cells: Building with Biology\, a book that explores the new frontier of biotech. She is a TED Senior Fellow\, Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Cooper Union and a former Staff Associate Postdoctoral Researcher in the Laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering\, Columbia University. She has a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from the Cooper Union\, a Master’s in Bioelectrical Engineering from MIT\, a PhD in Biomedical Engineering\, and an MBA from Columbia University. Her PhD research focused on studying electrical signaling in the context of tissue engineering\, and has worked with cardiac\, skin\, bone\, and neural tissue. \nTandon spent her early career in telecom at Avaya Labs and transitioned into biomedical engineering via her Fulbright Scholarship in Italy\, where she worked on an electronic nose used to “smell” lung cancer. After completing her PhD\, she consulted at McKinsey and Company\, but since 2010 she has continued her work in tissue engineering. Nina has published 10 journal articles (cited > 300 times\, H = 9) and six book chapters\, and she has three patents. She’s been published in Nature Protocols and Lab on a Chip\, has spoken three times at TED\, and was named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company. \nHemai Parthasarathy is the Scientific Director of Breakout Labs and the Thiel Foundation. She is responsible for establishing the scientific priorities of the program and evaluating the technical merits of submitted proposals. Hemai brings a deep commitment to scientific innovation and communication to Breakout Labs. She has served as the North American Editor for Nature and was a founding editor of PLOS\, the open-access publisher of PLOS ONE. Before joining the Thiel Foundation\, she advised research institutes\, non-profits\, and biotechnology companies on the development and communication of their scientific portfolios. She holds a Ph.D. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Read more here.
