SUMMARY:Firms with Benefits: How Sustainability is Reshaping the Competitive Business Landscape (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated By Aziza Jamgerchinova ’13BUS ’06JRN \nWednesday\, September 27th\, 2017\n6-8 p.m. \nRefreshments included with RSVP \nWarren Hall\, Room 311\n1125 Amsterdam Avenue\nNew York\, NY 10027 \nOverview\nMost executives understand the strategic importance of sustainability and how profoundly it will affect the success\, and even the survival\, of their businesses. However\, very few have successfully tackled the challenge of creating a truly sustainable organization. \nWhere do businesses turn when seeking to develop or expand their sustainability practices? Where can they find answers to questions around how best to manage their supply chain\, or how to reduce their carbon emissions? \nThe Firms with Benefits platform aims to help businesses understand how others have benefitted from incorporating sustainability into key areas of their organizations such as leadership\, methodology\, strategy\, management\, and reporting. This platform intends to cultivate and enhance both the desire and the ability to use sustainability as a competitive weapon. \nFirms with Benefits will help businesses get smarter\, more competitive\, and more innovative by synthesizing the conversation around sustainability. The goal is to create an instructional content platform with dynamic learning videos that are short\, mobile\, and immediately actionable. The information will be curated for the existing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) community and businesses looking to leverage sustainability-based management. The videos will tell stories that identify key decision points that can be used by other companies looking to implement sustainable practices of their own. \nAreas for discussion \n\nWhat is the driving force behind corporate giants adapting and embracing sustainable business practices?\nWhat are the current sources of information and resources available to a company seeking to develop or expand its sustainability practices?\nWhat are various ways to share and scale knowledge around sustainable business practices and advancements?\nHow should a new sustainable business platform engage with existing groups and incorporate existing resources?\n\nFacilitator Biography\nAziza Jamgerchinova ’13BUS ’06JRN \n\nAziza Jamgerchinova is a digital media consultant specializing in multi-platform content strategy and product development. She is an award-winning journalist\, and spent more than a decade covering international and current affairs at The New York Times and CNN. She has also worked for companies at the center of the digital transformation of news\, including Press+\, GlobalPost\, and GershonMedia. \nIn her current role\, Aziza advises the world’s leading media and entertainment companies across the full spectrum of activities they need for profitable growth of their digital video businesses. Previously\, Aziza led the expansion of GlobalPost\, an independent news organization that was acquired by the country’s largest public broadcaster (WGBH in Boston). \nAziza is an adjunct lecturer at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and a Visiting Broadcast Professor at the Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media in Bangalore. She also serves on the board of directors of Columbia Business School’s Alumni Club of New York\, where she was elected President in 2016.

SUMMARY:Film Screening of Prosperity (Screening and Keynote)
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL COLUMBIANS \nProsperity is following a new generation of companies that are doing the right thing and deserve our attention (and money). There’s an emerging movement of “For Benefit” companies that are building into their bylaws the new ethics of conscious companies. In the old days\, a CEO could be sued by the board if he/she didn’t maximize profits at any cost. Now\, companies can elect to be “For Benefit” and factor in doing the right thing over just profits alone. \nOur feature length movie is following the key players in this movement and showing a real positive way out of the mess we’ve inherited and helped co-create. The more we support this blossoming movement\, the more money goes to people who care…people who will take a stand for our values and our environment. \nWe have our cameras on these heroes and are going to break some amazing news in the release of this movie. From CEOs of major public companies\, to urban farmers\, and remote tribes\, we’re covering the whole story in a powerful narrative. \nRSVP HERE.

SUMMARY:Spark Workshop: Hacking Community Solar
DESCRIPTION:The Democratization of Solar Energy\nFeaturing Donna Sanders ’17BUS\,  co-founder of Social Solar\,\nwith special guests Gary Skulnik\, Founding Partner of OurPower\, and Annie Su\, Senior Analyst of Ecogy Solar\nPollution that arises from the burning of fossil fuels has several environmental\, financial\, and health consequences. As a result\, international\, national\, and local laws are being enacted favoring renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. New York State\, specifically\, has enacted a Clean Energy Standard that mandates 50 percent of all energy come from renewable sources by 2030. \nSocial Solar\, founded by Columbia University alumni\, caters to NYC residents and businesses who are dissatisfied with being excluded from solar simply because they live in co-ops and condos\, or because their business rooftop is too small. Social Solar’s service is a new shared solution that provides consolidation of solar needs to form one solar community as an inclusive option for solar power\, utility savings\, and cleaner air. Join us to discuss: \n\nWhat are some of the financial and structural barriers prohibiting widespread community solar adoption in NYC?\nWhat are viable community solar solutions?\n\nFor more event information\, please click here. This workshop is supported by the Lang Center for Entrepreneurship\, Social Enterprise Club\, Green Business Club\, and Tamer Center for Social Enterprise at Columbia Business School; and the Columbia Organization of Rising Entrepreneurs (CORE) at Columbia University. \nAbout the Spark Workshop Series \nSpark Workshops provide social innovators with an opportunity to explore resources\, connections\, and potential solutions to help their social ventures. These workshops tap into the collective knowledge within Columbia University and the larger entrepreneurial and social impact community. \nThis workshop is open to all who are willing to bring their ideas\, experience\, and connections to help solve social and environmental challenges that these social innovators aim to address. \nIf you are unable to attend this event but would like more information on Spark\, please register for our mailing list. \nIf you would like to suggest a future Spark workshop\, please contact:\nsocialenterprise@gsb.columbia.edu

SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: Capital and the Common Good
DESCRIPTION:Capital and the Common Good\nHow Innovative Finance Is Tackling the World’s Most Urgent Problems\nwith professor\nGeorgia Levenson Keohane\nMonday\, October 17\, 2016\nUris Hall\, Room 332\n6:00 – 8:00 p.m. \nRSVP \nDespite social and economic advances around the world\, poverty and disease persist\, exacerbated by the mounting challenges of climate change\, natural disasters\, political conflict\, mass migration\, and economic inequality. While governments commit to addressing these challenges\, traditional public and philanthropic dollars are not enough. Here\, innovative finance has shown a way forward: by borrowing techniques from the world of finance\, we can raise capital for social investments today. Innovative finance has provided polio vaccines to children in the DRC\, crop insurance to farmers in India\, pay-as-you-go solar electricity to Kenyans\, and affordable housing and transportation to New Yorkers. It has helped governmental\, commercial\, and philanthropic resources meet the needs of the poor and underserved and build a more sustainable and inclusive prosperity. \n \nCapital and the Common Good shows how market failure in one context can be solved with market solutions from another: an expert in securitization bundles future development aid into bonds to pay for vaccines today; an entrepreneur turns a mobile phone into an array of financial services for the unbanked; and policy makers adapt pay-for-success models from the world of infrastructure to human services like early childhood education\, maternal health\, and job training. Revisiting the successes and missteps of these efforts\, Georgia Levenson Keohane argues that innovative finance is as much about incentives and sound decision-making as it is about money. When it works\, innovative finance gives us the tools\, motivation\, and security to invest in our shared future.
