It aims at fostering research collaboration among Columbia faculty\, graduate students and affiliates\, facilitating their contacts with financial institutions and corporations and enhancing the visibility of Columbia as a center for research and innovation in financial engineering. \nThe Center’s research activities deal with the pricing and hedging of derivative securities\, the statistical modeling of financial markets\, computational methods in finance\, risk management\, asset allocation\, and portfolio optimization. \nThe Financial Analytics Center is one of the key centers at the Data Science Institute at Columbia University. SUMMARY:Molecular Innovations for Live Cell Imaging (Presentation)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 9\, 2019 \n4:00PM – 6:00PM\n\nBuell Hall\n\n515 West 116th Street\n\nNew York\, NY 10027\n\n\nThe fluorescent proteins revolutionized our ability to study protein function directly in the cell by enabling individual proteins to be selectively labeled through genetic encoding of a fluorescent tag. As researchers seek to make increasingly sophisticated dynamic measurements of protein function in the cell to unravel molecular mechanism\, we designed a chemical tag to combine the advantages of genetic encoding with a modular organic fluorophore. With TMP-tag\, the protein of interest is tagged with E. coli dihydrofolate reductase\, which can subsequently be labeled with a cell permeable trimethoprim-fluorophore conjugate. Here we demonstrate that TMP-tag is a robust cellular reagent. We present recent results exploiting the modular nature of the chemical tag to generate TMP-tags for specific applications in single-molecule\, super-resolution\, and multi-color imaging. We look forward to innovations at the interface of chemical tag technology and spectroscopy for biological imaging. \nVirginia W. Cornish graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with a B.A. in Biochemistry in 1991\, where she did undergraduate research with Professor Ronald Breslow. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry with Professor Peter Schultz at the University of California at Berkeley and then was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Biology Department at M.I.T. under the guidance of Professor Robert Sauer. Virginia joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department at Columbia in 1999\, where she carries out research at the interface of chemistry and biology\, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2004 and then Professor in 2007. Her laboratory brings together modern methods in synthetic chemistry and DNA technology to expand the synthetic capabilities of living cells. Her research has resulted in 59 research publications and several patents and currently is supported by multiple grants from the NIH and NSF. Virginia has been recognized for her research by awards including an NSF Career Award (2000)\, a Sloan Foundation Fellowship (2003)\, the Protein Society Irving Sigal Young Investigator Award (2009)\, and the American Chemical Society Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry (2009). SUMMARY:HTA Health Challenge Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO MEDICAL\, ENGINEERING\, AND BUSINESS STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\nThis one-week challenge will kick-off on Friday\, April 19th and will finish with the final presentations on Friday\, April 26th. The Challenge will take place at the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the Presbyterian Hospital\, on the 20th floor in the collaboration room (PH20-307). Teams will be formed\, start to prototype\, and formulate a marketable product between 1-6pm on the 19th and 1-4pm on the 26th at PH20-307. DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Brown Institute awards up to $1M in grants and fellowships — its “Magic Grant” program provides funding to develop a story idea or to pursue new technology that advances the way stories are found and told. In addition to funding\, grantees have access to a distinguished advisory and mentoring group\, and an extensive and inspiring alumni network. \nAre you passionate about the role that emerging technologies can play in the future of media? Do you have a story that can only be told outside the scope of traditional media? A Brown Institute “Magic Grant” might be for you. \nSince its founding in 2012\, the Brown Institute’s “Magic Grants” have funded 150 people and over 50 projects. Previous grants include… \n\nA 360-video documentary on the famine in South Sudan\, co-produced with PBS FRONTLINE.\nA database to collect and contextualize the reporting by the nearly 100 journalists killed in Mexico since 2000 — providing the history of the places where they lived\, the social forces they faced\, and the stories they told.\nA natural language processing algorithm that “reads” a news article and counts citations by gender — it is currently under trial at both the Financial Times and the New York Times.\nA series of deep audits of forensic DNA software\, exploring and exposing important issues of algorithmic transparency that include both the mathematical description of an algorithm as well as its implementation in software.\nA new “urban storytelling” reportage\, mixing illustration\, analog data visualization and oral history\, resulting in a portrait of NYC’s “canners\,” people who pick up cans and bottles on the streets of NYC for a living\, and published by NPR\, The Gothamist and The Guardian.\nExperiments with natural and gestural (i.e.\, not a joystick) interfaces to drones.\nAn open-source software infrastructure to explore and systematically analyze extremely large video collections — with a focus on examining the last decade of TV news.\nA prototype aid for science journalists as they assess a “breaking” research report — Is the topic timely? Is the report at the center or the periphery of a debate? And given the network of the authors\, the report’s citations and the other scientists working in the field\, who would make a good source for comments?\n\nAnd the list goes on. You can see the 2018-2019 grants on this website. \nFrom the Brown Institute: \nWe are looking for story proposals\, new software platforms or even innovations in hardware. We are interested in projects that advance storytelling and journalism through original technology development. We also are interested in tools\, technologies and stories that extend media broadly.
