SUMMARY:Application Deadline: Envision Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:Applications for Envision Entrepreneurship are now Open! \n(Due by October 7th\, 2017) \nApply here \nWhat is Envision Entrepreneurship?\nEnvision Entrepreneurship is a pitch competition\, hosted by Princeton\, for start-ups in frontier tech that drive large-scale impact. Our focus technologies are: \nAI/Robotics\nBiotechnology\nNanoscale (Nanotech/Fusion)\nEnhanced Interfaces (VR/AR and Brain-Machine Interfaces) \nHow is EE different?\nEE entrepreneurs work with technologies that could have deep positive impact and yet\, drastic negative consequences. EE is therefore a discussion that goes beyond the usuals in pitch competitions (e.g. market size\, bringing products to customers) to include how the start-up’s innovation fits in the bigger context of human progress (e.g. how the start-up mitigates the impact of its innovation’s negative consequences). \nWho can apply?\nAnyone with a viable idea or start-up! Envision Entrepreneurship is during the Envision Conference and we encourage all Conference participants to apply\, but the competition is open to all. If you are a Conference participant\, you may also form teams with non-participants. \nWhat do I deliver?\nTell us about your start-up idea here by October 7th 2017\, 11:59pm EST*. Your solution: \nMust be a high impact solution that harnesses one or more of our focus technologies\nMust be commercially viable and have potential for future profitability\nCan still be in incubation or prototype phase\, although teams should be able to demonstrate progress they have made so far and where they intend to go from here \nWhat will I get?\nThe top 5 finalists will pitch during the Envision Conference to conference participants\, Princeton students and our judges: \nJon Gosier (Founder\, Wounds AI and Southbox)\nDanielle Strachman (Founder and General Partner\, 1517 Fund)\nGeorgia Dinest (Director at Kernel\, Former Lead at Google X)\nJake Poliskin (Associate\, Mark Cuban Companies) \nNon-conference finalists will have the opportunity to network with our judges and other conference participants during the reception that will occur afterwards.** \nInterested in applying to the Envision Conference? Apply to the conference here by October 7th 2017\, 11:59pm EST. For queries\, contact Madhu at ms54@princeton.edu. We look forward to reading your applications! \n*Please submit one application form per team.\n**We will leave it up to finalists to decide how many members of your team will be presenting\, as long as there is at least one member present. Note that we will not be providing travel reimbursements for non-Conference participants.

SUMMARY:Examining Gender Bias and Venture Financing (Livestream Event)
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL – ONLINE ONLY \nDana Kanze ’19BUS\, holds a TEDx talk about her PhD research on the gender gap in startup funding. Webcast will be made available here. \nFrom Forbes: \n\nAccording to Kanze\, only around 2% of VC funding goes to women entrepreneurs\, despite the facts that women own 38% of U.S. businesses and now represent 7% of VCs\, up from 3% in 2014. \nWhen it comes to raising capital through public competition\, Kanze’s team found that women at TechCrunch Disrupt New York were faced with more negatively framed questions from both male and female VCs than male presenters were.

SUMMARY:2017 Social Enterprise Conference (Event)
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL \nLeaders Taking a Stand: Social Impact in Turbulent Times\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe current political climate creates an uneasy world stage for companies to navigate. Who are the business leaders who are stepping up to the challenge and leading by example? In turbulent times whom do we look to for leadership? Join us on October 6\, 2017 as we explore how to enact social impact across disciplines: philanthropies\, nonprofit organizations\, social ventures\, and traditional business. In this year’s conference you will meet business and organizational leaders who actively use their platform to drive change in education reform\, the refugee crisis\, job creation for the formerly incarcerated\, and climate change. \nWe each have a role to play for this is our future to form. What could we accomplish together if we each collaborated with one or two people in this room? We have a choice to call upon each other and motivate ourselves and others into action. Take a stand towards driving innovation and impact around social challenges and participate in our day-long hackathon led by TYTHEdesign. During the hackathon\, participants will use the insights and best practices from conference speakers to create strategies and solutions for impact with cross-disciplinary thinkers\, innovators\, and changemakers. \nMore information on the agenda HERE.

SUMMARY:The Transparency Series - Series 1\, Polling (Panel)
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL COLUMBIANS \nA unique set of seminars and hands-on workshops that bring new technology and design ideas to the Columbia Journalism community. The goal is simple — help students learn new ways to find and tell stories\, new ways to inform and entertain. Each topic will commence with a Friday evening panel discussion and will follow with a Saturday hands-on workshop centered around building. \nStudents attending three of the seminar-workshops over the course of the year will receive a graduation award indicating the extra breadth they sought out during their time at the J-School. \nMORE INFO \n*** \nJoin us in at Reuters for a discussion on polling and its importance in the presidential race. As the 2016 election nears\, we pore over opinion polls looking for subtle (or not so subtle) clues about how things will fare on November 8. We say Clinton is ahead because most of the polls have her ahead\, yet there are polls that have Trump ahead. Which polls are right? Or reliable? To journalists\, of course\, the polls themselves aren’t the story\, they help tell us a story. The narrative power of polls extends far beyond a single number on a given day. Taken collectively and in combination with other data\, we can tell deep stories about the nature of our public’s opinions.

SUMMARY:Firms with Benefits: How Sustainability is Reshaping the Competitive Business Landscape (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated By Aziza Jamgerchinova ’13BUS ’06JRN \nWednesday\, September 27th\, 2017\n6-8 p.m. \nRefreshments included with RSVP \nWarren Hall\, Room 311\n1125 Amsterdam Avenue\nNew York\, NY 10027 \nOverview\nMost executives understand the strategic importance of sustainability and how profoundly it will affect the success\, and even the survival\, of their businesses. However\, very few have successfully tackled the challenge of creating a truly sustainable organization. \nWhere do businesses turn when seeking to develop or expand their sustainability practices? Where can they find answers to questions around how best to manage their supply chain\, or how to reduce their carbon emissions? \nThe Firms with Benefits platform aims to help businesses understand how others have benefitted from incorporating sustainability into key areas of their organizations such as leadership\, methodology\, strategy\, management\, and reporting. This platform intends to cultivate and enhance both the desire and the ability to use sustainability as a competitive weapon. \nFirms with Benefits will help businesses get smarter\, more competitive\, and more innovative by synthesizing the conversation around sustainability. The goal is to create an instructional content platform with dynamic learning videos that are short\, mobile\, and immediately actionable. The information will be curated for the existing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) community and businesses looking to leverage sustainability-based management. The videos will tell stories that identify key decision points that can be used by other companies looking to implement sustainable practices of their own. \nAreas for discussion \n\nWhat is the driving force behind corporate giants adapting and embracing sustainable business practices?\nWhat are the current sources of information and resources available to a company seeking to develop or expand its sustainability practices?\nWhat are various ways to share and scale knowledge around sustainable business practices and advancements?\nHow should a new sustainable business platform engage with existing groups and incorporate existing resources?\n\nFacilitator Biography\nAziza Jamgerchinova ’13BUS ’06JRN \n\nAziza Jamgerchinova is a digital media consultant specializing in multi-platform content strategy and product development. She is an award-winning journalist\, and spent more than a decade covering international and current affairs at The New York Times and CNN. SUMMARY:Film Screening of Prosperity (Screening and Keynote)
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL COLUMBIANS \nProsperity is following a new generation of companies that are doing the right thing and deserve our attention (and money). There’s an emerging movement of “For Benefit” companies that are building into their bylaws the new ethics of conscious companies. In the old days\, a CEO could be sued by the board if he/she didn’t maximize profits at any cost. Now\, companies can elect to be “For Benefit” and factor in doing the right thing over just profits alone. \nOur feature length movie is following the key players in this movement and showing a real positive way out of the mess we’ve inherited and helped co-create. The more we support this blossoming movement\, the more money goes to people who care…people who will take a stand for our values and our environment. \nWe have our cameras on these heroes and are going to break some amazing news in the release of this movie. From CEOs of major public companies\, to urban farmers\, and remote tribes\, we’re covering the whole story in a powerful narrative. \nRSVP HERE.

SUMMARY:The Transparency Series - Series 1\, Polling (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO COLUMBIA JOURNALISM STUDENTS \nA unique set of seminars and hands-on workshops that bring new technology and design ideas to the Columbia Journalism community. \nMORE INFO \n*** \nThe first workshop in the Transparency Series takes you through techniques for looking at one or more polls over time. Your instructor is Harry Enten\, a senior political analyst at FiveThirtyEight. He will be assisted by his colleague Neil Paine\, another talented data journalist and sportswriter. The day-long workshop will present tools and strategies for working with polls — starting at the very beginning with simple random samples\, and leading to the detailed models that are employed today. All the while\, we will emphasize how to find and tell interesting\, novel stories with polls. No prior experience in statistics or data analysis is needed.

SUMMARY:Data Science Institute Colloquium Series Event: What Can Deep Learning Learn from Linear Regression
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL \nABSTRACT \nWhen training large-scale deep neural networks for pattern recognition\, hundreds of hours on clusters of GPUs are required to achieve state-of-the-art performance. Improved optimization algorithms could potentially enable faster industrial prototyping and make training contemporary models more accessible. \nIn this talk\, I will attempt to distill the key difficulties in optimizing large\, deep neural networks for pattern recognition. In particular\, I will emphasize that many of the popularized notions of what make these problems “hard” are not true impediments at all. I will show that it is not only easy to globally optimize neural networks\, but that such global optimization remains easy when fitting completely random data. \nI will argue instead that the source of difficulty in deep learning is a lack of understanding of generalization—namely understanding behavior on new and unseen data. By appealing to standard concepts from linear regression\, I will describe why certain popular theories of generalization fail to explain the success of large neural nets. I will close with some possible approaches to patching this theory and guiding the engineering of deep learning models with enormous capacity. \n
