SUMMARY:Health Hacks
DESCRIPTION:HealthHacks is a two-day hackathon combining creative hardware and software solutions to real-world healthcare problems through innovation\, creativity\, and interdisciplinary teamwork. \nThe inaugural HealthHacks will take place at Columbia University from April 8-9\, 2017 over a period of 24 hours and will start in Davis Auditorium at 8:00AM on April 8th. \nHealthHacks emerged from a quest in 2017 to integrate and scale emergent health technologies to critical needs within the ecosystems of health and wellness. A team of passionate students within BMES and HTA teamed up with IBM Watson and its partner STMicroelectronics to provide novel tools for hackable discovery. \nWe seek to engage the talents of the HealthHackers community. They are 100 designers\, students\, engineers\, healthcare professionals\, and business experts with diverse backgrounds committed to provide scalable solutions as interdisciplinary as the teams that devise them. \nThanks to the collaboration between IBM Watson and ST and their long-term efforts to provide high-end IoT solutions\, HealthHacks provides the community with a unique range of powerful tools\, from hardware to software\, to enable prototyping of wearable devices for medicine\, healthcare\, and biotechnology.

SUMMARY:Innovation Grant Info Session: Sizing Markets & Projecting Budgets
DESCRIPTION:Love often blinds novice entrepreneurs.  They become enamored with their technology or business model almost to a fault.  There’s nothing wrong with that per se.  Passion is an important component in launching a startup.  However\, if founders ignore the financial model that accompanies the business model\, their lunch will be more of a sad fizzle. \nMichael Lopez will help you add financial viability to your startup story.  When you submit your innovation grant summary\, you’ll need to include those aspects that will be most relevant to potential investors – even if fundraising is a long way off. Michael will help you gain an understanding how to build a credible story through numbers. \nMicheal Lopez\, Partner at EisnerAmper\nAbout Michael\nMichael Lopez is a Partner at EisnerAmper and has more than 25 years of experience relating to a broad range of audit\, accounting\, tax\, and finance issues. Michael’s clientele includes software companies\, Internet commerce\, IT services companies\, telecommunications providers\, magazine and book publishers\, graphic communication companies\, and various sports\, media and entertainment entities. He is a member of the firm’s Private Business Services Group. Michael is a past recipient of the New York Enterprise Report’s Best Accountant for Growing Businesses (Technology Industry) Award.

SUMMARY:YES\, You Really Can Use This! -- Applying Data Science to Real-World Problems
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nBooz Allen Hamilton’s Dan Liebermann and Ben Arancibia will cover what it takes to get data science done in the real world.  They will be sharing stories from the trenches – covering experiences and lessons learned from turning data science theory into reality when the problem (and the solution) are far from known.  The talk will heavily engage the audience to hear their perspective\, and cover the approach Booz Allen took to solve its clients’ problems.  The goal is to get the audience thinking about what they would do in these situations and how they would apply their classroom experience. \nBIOGRAPHY\nDan Liebermann\, a Lead Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton\, has a track-record of leading successful analytical and technical engagements while drawing on his project management skills. Dan has ten years of experience conducting data analysis and managing data science projects where he has used his combination of consulting and data science skills to help his clients derive the most value from their data.  His work has included applications in statistics\, machine learning\, data mining\, and population modeling\, in addition to supporting the organizational and people sides of developing a data science capability.  Dan has used tools such as R\, Bayesialab\, and Excel to perform statistical and analytical techniques.  Dan holds a M.P.A. with a specialization in Management from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs\, and a B.A. from Carnegie Mellon University. \nBen Arancibia\, a Lead Data Scientist in Booz Allen Hamilton’s Strategic Innovation Group has significant experience in statistical analysis\, Big Data analytical processes\, database development\, as well as\, the R\, and Python programming languages. Ben’s work includes applied data science\, building Big Data systems\, and web application development. Prior to working for Booz Allen\, Ben worked extensively in international development managing software development projects and as a GIS developer. Ben holds a MS in Data Science from the City University of New York where his graduate research focused on fraud detection in financial foreign assistance transactions. He holds an undergraduate degree from William and Mary in quantitative economics.

Visioneers will be the driving force behind the next generation of prizes to help push humanity forward. And you were saying you wanted to do something meaningful? This is it. \nSigns You Might Be Visioneer Material \nYou’re compelled to make the world a better place. Duh.\nYou’re audacious — some might call you obsessed — with finding your path to making real impact.\nYou’re an information junkie: constantly consuming the latest news and technology to help bring about the breakthroughs our world needs.\nYou connect the dots: not satisfied with simply comprehending the problem\, you tend to see problems as unfilled opportunities. Always stumbling upon the subtle links between seemingly disparate subjects or situations\, you can’t resist dreaming up potential solutions. \nThe Challenge \nWe are seeking industry disruptors\, social advocates\, tinkerers\, innovators and empathetic leaders who are excited to get their hands dirty in a problem\, participate in deep research\, talk to experts and inventors\, and then talk to them again. You must be eager to debate\, learn\, analyze\, create\, and work closely with other team members. You understand how to set audacious goals and possess the vision of a breakthrough for a currently unsolved problem. \nImagine being partnered with a team and tools to lend your vision and skills to the art of designing an XPRIZE competition — that’s exactly what we’re doing for next class of Visioneers.
