DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO COLUMBIA JOURNALISM STUDENTS \nA unique set of seminars and hands-on workshops that bring new technology and design ideas to the Columbia Journalism community. The goal is simple — help students learn new ways to find and tell stories\, new ways to inform and entertain. Each topic will commence with a Friday evening panel discussion and will follow with a Saturday hands-on workshop centered around building. \nStudents attending three of the seminar-workshops over the course of the year will receive a graduation award indicating the extra breadth they sought out during their time at the J-School. \nMORE INFO \n*** \nArtists Allison Parrish and R. Luke DuBois will introduce and discuss the ways in which textual materials (literature\, poetry\, news articles\, government records and other primary sources\, etc.) can be worked with as data in creative and insightful ways. Participants in this workshop will be exposed to some common techniques for textual analysis and representation of documents common in contemporary practice. Participants will be led through creative exercises around the intersection of computation and language as a way to gain familiarity and comfort with this medium. The workshop will involve a bit of programming in Python to allow participants to work with\, visualize\, and generate text in interesting ways.

SUMMARY:Hacking for Energy: The Final Presentations (Showcase)
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL \nREGISTER HERE \nThursday\, April 26\, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM (Doors open at 12:30 PM) \nThe 10th Floor Lounge at Riverside Church\, 91 Claremont Avenue\, 10th Floor \nNew York\, NY 10027 \nRefreshments will be served. \nJoin the entrepreneurial students of Hacking for Energy as they present their MVPs and business models! The students were tasked to build solutions for real energy and sustainability challenges using the Lean LaunchPad methodology. This year\, 4 student teams from Columbia\, NYU\, and CUNY worked on challenges posed by the EPA\, the NYC DEP\, NYISO\, and EPRI. The teams will share their solutions and the results of their customer discovery journey at a final presentation event that is open to the public. \nThe class will be taught next year\, so if you are interested in the results or participating in the class as a student\, Industry Host or mentor\, we encourage you to stop by!

DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL \nREGISTER HERE \nThe future can feel uncertain\, so we created Design Your Future as a program where students learn to apply human-centered design to their careers and life beyond Columbia. \nThe goal of this program is to help you better navigate your career and life choices in the face of uncertainty. \nDesign Your Future gives you the tools to help you get unstuck in life. Design relies heavily on small experiments and rapid iteration. You will learn how to craft and run small experiments that can keep your work and life choices aligned with your goals. This program is highly interactive–there will be far more activities than lectures. \nDuring the workshop you will: \n▪ Reflect on strengths and passions\n▪ Map out multiple future trajectories\n▪ Design small experiments for your life\n▪ Identify and address personal barriers \nDesign Your Future is open to the entire Columbia community. \nNote: this program will leverage design but not teach it explicitly. If you are interested in learning how to practice human centered design or use it to launch a startup\, see our other programs.
