Juris

Juris is building the Internet’s Dispute Resolution System, which resolves legal disputes online so people don’t have to go to court.

Juris is a LegalTech startup founded by two brothers, Ethan Mackay ’19BUS/’19LAW  and Adam Kerpelman. Raised by two litigators, Ethan and Adam have long been familiar with the mismatch between courts that are slow, opaque, and expensive, and the internet, which is fast, transparent, and affordable. They cofounded Juris to build the Internet’s Dispute Resolution System, which resolves legal disputes online so people don’t have to go to court. Simply put, Juris is the Stripe of dispute resolution. Their mission is to make the world more fair; to help provide civil justice to the four billion people estimated by the U.N. to be excluded from the rule of law today.

Adam came up with the original idea while studying the intersection of law and technology at Southwestern Law School. After graduating, he began pursuing the project full time. In February 2018, he released a whitepaper outlining in great detail how an online dispute resolution system could work if tailored to blockchain-powered marketplaces. Adam shared the whitepaper with Ethan while he was completing his law and business degrees at Columbia. Immediately intrigued by the idea, its potential to help millions of people, and the prospect of working with his brother, Ethan jumped onboard.

Once completed, Juris will be a full-stack, online dispute resolution system as fast, transparent, and affordable as the web, and able to resolve almost any kind of civil dispute. The first service the team built is very simple but has the potential to resolve millions of disputes each year. The target user is a person being harassed by a junk debt collector. This service automates the drafting, mailing, and tracking of a dispute letter that causes these junk debt collectors to go away in up to 50% of cases. Juris will grow by building increasingly complex services to resolve increasingly complex disputes until eventually it can provide services to very high-value verticals like e-commerce, which generated over one billion disputes in 2017, growing by 30% annually.
