Sportaneous

Three years ago, Sportaneous was conceived on a basketball court by a couple of guys who thought there had to be a better way to use technology to get people to be more active. Reuben Doetsch ND CC and Omar Haroun ’12LAW, ’12BUS have since launched two award-winning apps that made it easier for people to exercise in the ways they most enjoy.

Awarded by Mayor Bloomberg in the “BigApps” competition and then by the White House, the first app created by Sportaneous let people find and propose pickup sports games around them. Their second app was a discovery & booking platform for fitness classes in New York City. The platform looked at the users’ age, gender, geographic location, and Facebook friends to make customized recommendations for activities and allowed users to book classes directly from the app.

In early 2013, Sportaneous was acquired by Greatist – a fast growing health and wellness venture. The Sportaneous team is now building new technologies to help Greatist provide more value to its 3 million+ person community.

Reuben and Omar share a passion around building products which help people become healthier and more active. Reuben and Omar are both active in the startup community and love helping out fellow Columbia entrepreneurs.
